why we oppose the centre

Detention, in this case indefinite detention, is inhumane. The high rates of depression, of self-harm, and the hunger strikes that occur in other detention centres make this clear. 

It is enormously expensive.  Estimates show that the new centre would cost in the region of £38 million per year to run.

It is unnecessary. In the last five years the number of asylum seekers arriving in Britain has declined. More detention places are not necessary if the government sticks to its stated policy of using detention only as a last resort. background

It is inappropriate for the proposed rural site, which is not in an identified employment growth area planning matters
